The beauty of human beings and the pursuit of personal beauty is a very important societal issue. Taking this into consideration provides a good reason to revive the aesthetic debate about beauty with a focus on human, personal beauty. As for many people it is a commonplace that inner beauty is crucial for personal beauty, inner beauty is an inevitable subtopic of personal beauty. Therefore, this paper aims at a better understanding of inner beauty as we nowadays speak about it. Based on the idea that inner beauty can be explained in terms of virtuousness, this paper discusses and compares three analyses of inner beauty: According to the moral virtue-analysis, inner beauty only depends on morally desirable character traits. The eudaimonistic virtue-analysis explains inner beauty in terms of Aristotelian virtuousness, and the relational virtue-analysis analyses inner beauty as relational virtuousness, that is in terms of amiable traits and abilities. This paper argues that the third proposal best meets the criterion of pre-theoretical fit and the criterion of aesthetic explanatory power. It best captures our intuitions about what character traits and cognitive abilities are relevant for inner beauty, and best explains why a relational virtuous character and mind is called beautiful. Therefore, inner beauty can be best understood in terms of relational virtuousness. |
