The paper explores how aesthetic experience (including, but not restricted to, the experience of beauty) might apply to poetry. Because of the association of experience with the senses it can be tempting to think that the experience of poetry must be rooted in certain kinds of sensory experience, thus in familiar qualities like the sounds, rhythms and textures of poetic language. Must, then, such formal qualities be the core focus of any adequate account of the aesthetic experience of poetry? The paper argues for a wider notion of aesthetic experience in this context, a notion that makes the connection with a species of literary appreciation that is not of necessity, or exclusively, grounded in sensory qualities. With the help of some examples, the aesthetic experience (or appreciation) of poetry is shown to be of a richer kind, resting on fine-grained attention to detail addressed to a form-content unity, involving interpretation as well as sensory pleasure. |
