Beauty forms not only an important part of human life, but also the core of aesthetics. For several reasons, it is not justified, however, to declare aesthetics to be the ‘science of beauty’ in the sense that it can be defined by reference to beauty as its subject matter. For instance, the expression ‘beauty’ is also used in non-aesthetic ways, whereas other phenomena cannot be subsumed under the notion of ‘beauty’ (or its opposite, ‘ugliness’) and under the notions of ‘sublimity’ or ‘art’ either. In order to know what we are talking about in aesthetics, it is necessary, therefore, first to determine its conceptual framework, on the one hand, and to distinguish the uses of ‘beauty’ in a more specific way, on the other. |
