In “Art, Beauty, and Criticism” I discuss the role of beauty in art criticism. Beginning with the common sense notion that art is by definition beautiful, I note how beauty has functioned as a litmus test for artistic achievement. However, that approach is challenged by the avant-garde of the last one-hundred-and-fifty-years-plus which reminds us that art, properly so-called, has often trafficked in works that were not beautiful, but sometimes even downright ugly. This called for a different conception of art and art criticism, for example, one like Arthur Danto’s which separates the concepts of art and beauty. Yet, a theory like Danto’s must nevertheless account for the presence of beauty in so many great works of art. To that end, Danto introduces the notion of “internal beauty.” But this fails to accommodate works of “external beauty.” To that end, I introduce the critical notion that artworks have constitutive purposes which they embody or articulate in forms that are appropriate to said purposes. |
