Aesthetic judgment has been predominantly conceived as a species of perceptual judgment thus inheriting the passive character often associated to it. This perceptual approach has permeated further issues typically discussed in Aesthetics, such as the centrality of the Acquaintance Principle, the problems of Aesthetic Testimony, or the puzzle of personal taste, which have been, in turn, addressed under an epistemological perspective. In my view, this epistemological approach has precluded a proper understanding of the aforementioned issues, establishing misguiding patterns for understanding certain phenomena. In this text, I explore an agential view of aesthetic judgment, emphasizing the active character of aesthetic judging and the importance of judging for oneself as essential to our understanding of its normative aspects. |
