Roman W. Ingarden (1893-1970) was a Polish phenomenologist with realist orientation, and one of the most prominent pupils of Edmund Husserl. Before World War II he was professor of philosophy in Lvov, later he held a chair in Cracow. His main works are: Das literarische Kunstwerk (1931), Der Streit um die Existenz der Welt (1964-65, written originally in Polish during World War II; the later version in German is not identical with the Polish version), and Über die Verantwortung; ihre ontischen Fundamente (1970). Ingarden is generally regarded as one of the important European ontologists of the 20th century. Ingarden refers to Twardowski’s theory of the part-whole relationship in the course of discussing Husserl’s investigations of parts and wholes. His remarks on this subject are contained in Der Streit, Bd II/1, ch. VIII, $ 43. He does not accept the basic assumption of Brentano and his successors that being a subject of properties can be interpreted in terms of parts and whole, since he insists on taking parts in ordinary sense: as independent objects.
