Abstrakt

Daniel Sennerts Hypomnemata Physica (1636) bietet faszinierende Einblicke in den späten aristotelischen Streit um den natürlichen Ursprung tierischer Seelen. Einerseits weisen Sennerts Einwände gegen scholastische Denker wie Antonio Ruvio und Benito Pereira auf einige der Probleme hin, die in einigen spätscholastischen Berichten über die Bildung tierischer Seelen aufgrund der Potenz der Materie auftreten. Auf der anderen Seite übersieht Sennert die von Francisco Suárez entwickelte Version der Theorie der Erziehung. Wie sich herausstellte, wird die Theorie von Suárez in den 1620er Jahren auf innovative Weise von Juan Gallego de la Serna angewendet, der sich für die Herkunft der tierischen Seelen aus rein materiellen Grundsätzen einsetzt. Sennert and Gallego, it becomes clear that Gallego regards animal seeds as entities with active powers of their own that, together with the active powers of the uterus, give rise to animal souls. Moreover, contrary to what Sennert assumes, Gallego is not committed to the problematic theory of a transfer of potencies from the uterus to the fetus; rather, in Gallego’s view the uterus acts upon the fetus by means of indirect touch, i.e., by means of a series of intermediary mechanical interactions. Finally, contrary to Sennert’s reading, for Gallego the seeds of the male and the female are material causes that are endowed with information bearing structures that guide the development of animal organs and animal souls, thereby providing an explanation for the similarity between parents and offspring as well as an explanation for the determination of sex.
