Papers by C. Von Ehrenfels, Kurt Grelling and Paul Oppenheim
Contributions by K. Mulligan, P.M. Simons and Barry Smith

In 1890 Christian von Ehrenfels published his classic paper "Über 'Gestaltqualitäten'", the first systematic investigation of the philosophy and psychology of Gestalt. Ehrenfels thereby issued an important challenge to the psychological atomism that was still predominant in his day. His paper not only exerted a powerful influence on the philosophy of the Meinong school, it also marked the beginning of the Gestalt tradition in psychology, later associated with the work of Wertheimer, Köhler and Koffka in Berlin.

The present volume, which contains the first English translation of Ehrenfels' paper, seeks to draw out the philosophical implications of Gestalt theory and to lay bare its roots. It contains important materials on the logic of Gestalt concepts, including translations and reprints of hitherto unobtainable papers by Grelling and Oppenheim. It is rounded off with an extensive annotated bibliography - a survey of the entire tradition of Gestalt theory from the work of the Graz and Berlin schools to contemporary developments in Italy and Japan.

As Gestalt ideas begin once more to play a role in cognitive science, both in reflections on basic assumptions and more particularly in work in pattern recognition theory and in Gestalt linguistics, the volume will not only facilitate access to a far-reaching and often difficult tradition, it will also serve as an indispensable starting point for future research.
