The aim of this paper is to clarify the structure and characteristics of the intentionality of caring and thereby contribute to a development of the phenomenological theory of nursing care. The essay first sketches out some key points pertaining to the phenomenological analysis of “willing” and “acting” which Husserl gives in the lectures of Summer Semester 1914, and then traces his phenomenological analysis of the relation between intentionality and motivation in Ideen II. Although Husserl’s analysis is not specifically oriented to the phenomenon of caring, the essay then applies Husserl’s analysis to the issue of “caring” in each step and tries to bring a structure of the intentionality of caring into relief. The concept of “caring” has a wide range, indeed. By focusing on nursing care, however, some aspects of the intentionality of caring, which have never been investigated, will be phenomenologically clarified. |
