In the common origins of the phenomenological and analytic traditions, intentionality was understood to be the intentionality of consciousness. Since consciousness is intrinsic to the intentional state, intentionality was understood to be narrow-determined solely by factors internal to the cognizer.

In the 1960’s, Saul Kripke and Hilary Putnam produced counterexamples to such an understanding-such a Putnam’s Twin Earth scenario-that convinced most of the analytic philosophical community that meaning and the content of mental states depend on historical or causal relations of the cognizer to his or her environment. Hopeful of finding a route to naturalizing intentionality, analytic philosophers of mind produced a variety of positions according to which broad content-content determined by historical and/or causal relations of the cognizer to its environment-is ubiquitous.

I use a brain-in-a-vat thought experiment to argue-based on our understanding of reference-that there is broad content only in the limited classes of cases from which Kripke’s and Putnam’s examples are drawn: proper names and natural kind terms (and thoughts of the sort that we express with such terms).
