Abstract

Metaphysics as Make-Believe begins by asking (the admittedly bland question) whether there is a philosophical position especially deserving of the title 'metaphysical fictionalism'.  Following a sometimes tortuous path through various contenders culled from recent work in meta-metaphysics, the paper finally arrives at a familiar view that could plausibly be repackaged under that banner: namely, fictionalism about the thesis that existence is a discriminating property, which some things have and others lack.  This fictionalization of Meinongian metaphysics is then argued to be either unmotivated or unintelligible, depending on the status of Meinongianism itself.  One way out of the dilemma is briefly sketched, but the paper concludes with the sentiment that we should probably look elsewhere for a view that might rightly be called 'metaphysical fictionalis
