Parmenides

From Handbook of Mereology

Price: €4.80 (including 19 % tax)

In the surviving fragments of Parmenides (fl. early 5th century BC) we find the verses (...) it is ungenerated and indestructible, whole, of one kind, and unwavering and complete. Nor was it, nor will it be, since now it is, all together one, continuous. (B8.3–6. Translation in Barnes 1987, p.134). These words have been interpreted in different ways (Palmer 2009, pp.17- 50). Some read them as specifying the features of what-is. They read them as expressing a strict monism (Guthrie 1965 p.120; Owen 1960, pp.50-55) whereby there exists exactly one thing. On such a view, everything would be part of everything, and thus nothing would have proper parts: everything would be an atom, Ax – as maintained by the theory of Compositional Nihilism (Rosen and Dorr 2002, p.152).
