Rather than being an exercise in superstition, talking about God is a genuine topic of the philosophia perennis. The existence and nature of God can be a matter of rational argument; his reality is accessible to reason. On the other hand, God’s reality is a uniquely difficult topic to engage. The very reference of the word “God” needs clarification before we can meaningfully inquire about his existence. While this might be true for a number of other philosophical terms as well, in this case our language, developed in the context of finite realities, tends towards conceptual idolatry, reducing God to one thing among others. Due caution about such reductions should not, on the other hand, lead to agnosticism; God can be known philosophically as first cause of the universe. This knowledge has its own probabilities and metaphysical proofs. It will also tell us something about how God must be in himself, i.e., in his nature: perfectly simple and alive, without suffering and transcending time, which he nevertheless knows completely. In addition, God is a personal God, who cares about his creation and therefore interacts in extraordinary ways with those creatures that he calls to communion with himself. Even this is accessible to philosophical knowledge, which is therefore by itself open to revealed insights into the nature of God.
►This present volume investigates these questions using the conceptual tools that might be considered most promising for rigorous analysis, namely those from the tradition of Analytical Philosophy as well as Thomist Metaphysics. Those interested in a philosophy open to larger questions such as the existence and nature of God will find in this volume resources that combine such larger questions with considerable attention to detail. The appended bibliographies intend to provide clues for further research.
